Spatial Layout and Construction of Buddhist Temple Landscapes in Hainan Island

Abstract: The historical evolution,lineage,site selection,plane layout and plant arrangement of Buddhist temple gardens in Hainan Island were investigated and analyzed through literature consulting,field expedition and graphic analysis.The results showed that 32 Buddhist temple gardens in Hainan Island are well preserved and mainly distributed in the north of Hainan Island as well as the coastal counties and cities in the east,west and south of Hainan Island.The plane layout of most of the Buddhist temple gardens are in the form of a seven-hall temple.The Buddhist culture-related plant species with high ornamental value and adaptability were reviewed in a view to providing reference for repairing and rebuilding of temple gardens in Hainan Island.
